Trolley Line #9 Trail A 1.5-mile asphalt and boardwalk walking path, the Trolley Line #9 Trail is great for hikers of any skill level. You can even veer slightly off the trail to check out nearby historical parks and museums. Since this trail used to be a trolley line connecting its major beginning and end points, you can easily immerse yourself in a feeling of days past as you stroll along. This evens out to about 200 miles of trails total, with about 70 miles maintained by the park. If you'd like a peaceful hike, you can explore hiker-only trails or elect the more heavily trafficked multi-use options. Trails range in difficulty from easy to moderate. The popular Cascade Falls Loop Trail, for example, is a 2.3-mile option that gains 318 feet in elevation and offers you spectacular views of the park's cascading waterfall. There are also shorter paths that lead you to the falls and back. Other hiking highlights include gorgeous wooded areas, streams, and wildlife. Explore this stunning park and all it has to offer today. Robinson Nature Center Robinson Nature Center is a great place to let your love of nature grow this season. You and your loved ones can explore a nature center that includes a discovery room, planetarium, gift shop, and plenty of natural exhibits and displays. There's also a natural play area for those who'd like to enjoy some time in nature without venturing too far from civilization. This nature preserve includes a collection of trails surrounding the property. Explore a popular, 1.1-mile Nature Center loop trail that quickly covers some of the park's most beautiful scenery. Before planning your visit, keep in mind that this park abides by the nature center's hours, meaning that it's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and requires a $5 admission price for adults and a $3 price for children over 3 years of age. This fee will be more than worth it, though, to explore some well-kept and serene natural woodland right near your backyard. Middle Patuxent Environmental Area and Foundation A "forever protected" oasis, the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area and Foundation is the largest park in Howard County. As a protected area, this is a great place to see the local wildlife, including 150 species of birds, 40 species of mammals, and various other reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, and plants. You're sure to share your nature time with some animal friends in this spot. To get up close and personal with these wild residents, explore the park's 5.5 miles of trails that meander through wood and stream land. A 2.4-mile Wildlife Loop Trail covers the park's best offerings, and can even be combined with the 2.3-mile Southwind Trail for a magical day of easy but engaging hiking. If you want to feel good about enjoying natural land without the worry of encroachment from the outside world, you may like a quiet walk in this park. Savage Park Part park and part hiking destination, you'll find yourself coming back to Savage Park again and again. There are recreational areas like baseball diamonds and basketball courts, a playground, and bathrooms to help you feel like you haven't strayed too far from the beaten path. Simply make a day of sitting out in nature with friends, or resolve to do a bit more walking while the weather's good. Go further into this land, and you can explore 2.8 miles of interconnecting trails, some that even link to the external Patuxent Branch Trail and Lake Elkhorn. The park's very own Savage Loop Trail offers terrain for hikers of all skill levels, but you can easily connect it to other trails to make a more challenging day of it. Enjoy streams, woods, and plenty of wildlife in this local park. WB&A Trail Although still a work in progress, the WB&A Trail is already a destination for walking enthusiasts. This paved trail runs from Odenton to the Patuxent River by way of the abandoned Washington, Baltimore, and Annapolis Railroad. While certain parts are still under construction, the plan is for a 5.7-mile option that's mostly flat but connects communities and trail networks. Open to walkers, hikers, bikers, and runners, this is a community gathering trail that's only getting bigger. Federal Hill Park For one of the best views of Baltimore (without the crowds), visit Federal Hill Park. This historic park dates back to 1608 when Capt. John Smith, an English colonial settler, discovered the site during a voyage and referred to it as a "great red bank of clay." In 1880, the city purchased Federal Hill and designated it as a public park. The park offers stunning views of the Inner Harbor and downtown Baltimore. You can bring a picnic to enjoy on the rolling hillside or visit in the evenings to gaze at the stars. Federal Park offers several amenities, including a playground, basketball court, and picnic tables. The Flag Staff Plaza, a recent addition to the park, pays tribute to the history of Baltimore and the state of Maryland. After you visit the park, spend some time browsing local shops or dining at one of the quality restaurants in the Federal Hill neighborhood. This charming community is home to many events, festivals, and street fairs, along with several museums and independent art galleries. Located on three acres, the sculpture gardens feature 33 works of art representing modern and contemporary sculpture over the last 100 years. An audio tour allows you to use your cellphone to learn more about each sculpture as you walk through this idyllic space. The Alan and Janet Wurtzburger Sculpture Garden, which opened in 1980, contains 19 early modernist works by well-known artists, including Auguste Rodin and Alexander Calder. It also features a stone terrace and fountain, making it a place where you can enjoy a moment of peace and reflection amid Baltimore's urban landscape. Below the Wurtzburger Sculpture Garden, you can stroll through the two-acre Ryda and Robert H. Levi Sculpture Garden, which houses 14 works from the late 20th century. Papermoon Diner While retaining its hidden-gem status among tourists, the Papermoon Diner is a beloved institution by Baltimore locals. The first thing you'll notice about the diner is its distinctive decor. Pez candy dispensers and colorful paintings line the walls, and you'll encounter numerous mannequins throughout the restaurant. It's impossible not to smile when you're at the Papermoon Diner. The diner's quirky decor is matched only by the creativity of its menu. It serves a variety of mouthwatering breakfast items, such as the Big Dipper, which consists of two pieces of brioche French toast filled with eggs, powdered sugar, and syrup, and is served with home fries. For lunch or dinner, the restaurant offers salads, sandwiches, quesadillas, burgers, and pasta. Don't leave without trying one of the diner's signature milkshakes, which come in delectable flavors like caramel sea salt, bacon, peanut butter, and espresso. Jones Falls Trail Baltimore has so many high-quality trails that you may have missed the Jones Falls Trail. If so, put it on your list of places to visit soon. The Jones Falls Trail is a moderately hilly trail that offers stunning views of both the urban landscape of the city and the forested hills of nature. The first part of the 11-mile trail goes past Baltimore landmarks, including Inner Harbor and Penn Station, and provides views of the downtown skyline and architecture. The other two parts of the trail offer more natural landscapes as they wind past vibrant gardens, dense woods, and meandering streams. While walking, jogging, or biking along the trail, you'll pass various sites, including the Maryland Zoo, the Cylburn Arboretum, and Druid Hill Park. There are blazes and signs to help you navigate the different parts of the trail, and you can access any part of it via the light rail or by parking nearby. Hours: Open daily Baltimore & Ohio Ellicott City Station Museum The Baltimore & Ohio Ellicott City Station Museum may fly under the radar, but it's no less impressive than the other world-class museums in the Baltimore area. Built in 1831, it is the oldest surviving railroad station in the country. It originally transported freight but added passenger service in 1857. Though it stopped functioning in 1972, local groups worked hard to restore the station so others could continue to learn about its role in Baltimore's industrial history. The museum, which is free to visit, has two levels featuring various exhibits, including the telegraph and ticketing office, a car house, and the freight agent's living quarters. Two other buildings on the property offer additional insight into the station's historical significance. In these buildings, you can view a replica of the track between Baltimore and Ellicott City and a 1927 caboose that operated on the rail line. As the leaves start to change color and the temperature begins to drop, there's no better way to spend the day than by taking a scenic drive and exploring what Maryland has to offer. Below, you can read about some of the best scenic fall drives near Clarksville, Maryland, and some adjacent outdoor attractions to explore. Ilchester Road in Ellicott City Ilchester Road in Ellicott City is a steep drive where you can view beautifully forested hills as you pass along it. Once you reach the end of Ilchester Road, you can get onto River Road, which offers equally impressive views. River Road will eventually lead you to Old Ellicott City. This city lies in the Patapsco River Valley and is the site of some fascinating history. If you want to get out and stretch your legs, you can join one of the guided walking tours that take place daily. On this tour, you can learn the history behind the 250-year-old mill town. Depending on which tour you take, you may pass attractions like the Thomas Isaac Log Cabin and the Ellicott City Colored School. As you're driving on Ilchester Road, River Road isn't the only option to pursue. As an alternative, you can turn right to get to one of the state park areas. From Ilchester Road, the most accessible state park is the Patapsco Valley State Park (Hilton Area). Here, you can get out and do some hiking, have some fun with your kids on the playground, and visit the area's nature center to learn more about the native wildlife. If you have the next day off, consider bringing your camper so that you can spend the night in the great outdoors. Homewood Road and Folly Quarter Road in Ellicott City Take MD-108 E/Clarksville Pike from Clarksville to get to Homewood Road. As you drive on Homewood Road, you'll see beautiful farmlands on either side of you. Keep an eye out for all the farm buildings along this route, as you'll see an interesting mix of old structures and new additions. As you turn onto Folly Quarter Road from Homewood Road, you'll see similar picturesque views along with beautiful forested areas and rolling roads. As you head back to Clarksville and get back onto Homewood Road, be sure to make a small detour to Clark's Elioak Farm. Clark's Elioak Farm is a gorgeous family farm that lets visitors enjoy hayrides and has a petting farm where you can interact with some of the animals. You can visit the Castle Store to purchase books, children's toys, and other souvenirs to take home with you. While you're at Clark's Elioak Farm, you should consider checking out the fresh meat and produce for sale. If you don't have time to stop and browse, you can order curbside pickup ahead of time. This way, you can quickly pick up your order and get back on the road toward home. The Farm Roads in West Friendship West Friendship has several farm roads that provide stunning views of farmlands, open fields, and forests. You can take MD-32 to get to the general area and then get off to start exploring the expansive roads. Two of our favorites are Carroll Mill Road and Rosemary Lane. If you want to stop along the way, you can check out the Howard County Living Farm Heritage Museum. Here, you can view demonstrations of how people used to live in historic Howard County. As you're traveling on the farm roads in West Friendship, you can first ensure your vehicle is in tip-top shape to handle your journey. Historic National Road Historic National Road is a 170-mile road that takes anywhere between four and six hours to drive. There's no shortage of stops you can make along the Historic National Road. For example, there are plenty of accessible gas stations, restaurants, rest stops, and camping sites. If you're looking for specific attractions to visit, you can plan accordingly to see sites like the B&O Railroad Museum, the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum, and the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. Old Frederick Road in Ellicott City Another scenic farm road in Ellicott City is Old Frederick Road. This road makes for an easy and peaceful drive that offers breathtaking visuals. Before you make it up to Johnnycake Road, you can take a detour and get onto Daniels Road. After a few miles, Daniels Road will lead you to the Daniels area of Patapsco Valley State Park. This area is largely undeveloped and mainly dedicated to hiking. You can stop at the Daniels Dam to marvel at the roaring waters and observe the fish and other nearby wildlife. One of the best things about the Daniels area of Patapsco Valley State Park is that it allows dogs, as long as they're on a leash. The next time you want to take a scenic drive, you don't have to leave your furry friend at home. Bring them along for the ride and have them explore the area with you. Once you get back onto Old Frederick Road, you can head north until you hit Johnnycake Road. This road takes you to the Pickall area of the Patapsco Valley State Park, where you can enjoy a fresh perspective on the outdoor world. Howard County is home to several sites along Maryland's Civil War Trails that enable history enthusiasts to discover the stories of soldiers, citizens, and enslaved men and women who found themselves at the heart of the conflict. These sites include the following: B&O Railroad Station: Guarded by Union forces during the Civil War, the B&O Railroad Station is the oldest railroad terminus in the United States. Today, the structure houses a free museum open to the public. Ellicott City Colored School: The Ellicott City Colored School is a one-room schoolhouse built by members of the U.S. Colored Troops after returning home from war. Patapsco Female Institute: The Patapsco Female Institute offered young women of the 1800s a robust educational curriculum that included subjects such as botany, literature, mathematics, and music. Today, the ruins of this Greek revival-style building serve as a venue for weddings and other special events. Savage Mill: This building once served as a cotton-weaving mill along the Patuxent River. Today, the historic structure is home to several specialty shops and restaurants. Thomas Viaduct: Located in the Orange Grove Area of Patapsco Valley State Park, the Thomas Viaduct served as a B&O Railroad bridge during the Civil War. Peek Into the Past at Historic Oakland Tucked away in a peaceful wooded area in downtown Columbia, the Historic Oakland mansion is one of the most beautiful settings in Howard County. The centerpiece of the Historic Oakland property is the manor house, a Federalist-style mansion built in 1811. Historic Oakland was the country home of Charles Sterrett Ridgely, who served as a speaker for Maryland's House of Delegates during the early 1800s. Today, Historic Oakland is the setting for meetings, special occasions, and community events for the residents of Columbia Town Center organized by the Columbia Town Center Community Association (TCCA). Landscaping on the mansion's grounds contributes to a park-like setting that features grand Southern magnolia trees, boxwood, and rhododendron plantings that complement the mansion's historic character. While the facility is not accepting visits from walk-in guests at this time, Historic Oakland occasionally opens to the public for special events. Constructed in 1869, the historic Bollman Truss Bridge served the B&O Railroad's operations. According to information from HistoricBridges.org, it is among the oldest metal bridges built in the United States. Bunny Train Join a train ride with the Easter bunny at the Walkersville Southern Railroad in Walkersville on April 9, 10, and 16. The trip features up close interactions with the Easter Bunny, a small gift, and refreshments at the museum after the hour-long train ride finishes.
