5 Reasons to Love Living in Maryland

If you've only lived in Maryland for a few years, it's possible you've discovered what makes this state so remarkable. Many of the locals will tell you it's the oh-so-delicious blue crab, the diverse cultural heritage, or the state's amazing education system. Whatever your reason for living in Maryland, we're here to offer five more incredible reasons to absolutely love living in the Free America state. Amazing Seafood If you've never tried Maryland's famous blue crab, then you are definitely missing out! Maryland is known for this blue underwater crustacean as it harvests about 50% of the country's supply. While they're famous for their succulent blue crabs, they're also well-known for other seafood fares, such as fresh local oysters, rockfish, crab cakes, and coddies. These traditional fried cakes from the early 1900s are a mixture of salt cod and potato served between saltine crackers with mustard on top. We highly recommend trying some of Baltimore's popular seafood cuisine at a few of our local favorite restaurants and diners. Bertha's Restaurant & Bar is known for serving mussels in a variety of flavors, such as garlic butter, Old Bay, Guinness broth, and spicy coconut milk. Established in 1886, Faidley's Seafood, located in Lexington Market, is famous for its jumbo lump crab cakes, oysters, fried fish, Maryland crab soup, and coddies. A restaurant that is always packed, Thames Street Oyster House serves a lobster roll that makes New England lobster rolls jealous. When it comes to delicious seafood, you won't go wrong living in Maryland. Along with its tasty underwater delights, Maryland is also known for Smith Island Cake, Berger cookies, National Bohemian Beer, Fisher's Popcorn, and a Baltimore summer tradition, the Snowball. Widely Diverse Culture Another great reason to love living in Maryland is the state's widely diverse culture. From its historical roots and its close location to the Mason-Dixon line, the Old Line State has a rich foundation that represents cultures from across the nation and the world. Out of the 10 most ethnically diverse cities in the United States ranked by WalletHub, four of them are in Maryland — Germantown, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring, and Rockville. There are several minority-owned businesses as well. Entrepreneur named Baltimore the #5 city in the country for supporting and providing opportunities for minority business owners. Maryland also celebrates its melting pot heritage as it plays host to several ethnic festivals. You can find events that pay homage to a number of ethnic cultures, such as Polish, African, Greek, Korean, Ukrainian, and more. The Caribbean Carnival and parade is held in Baltimore's Druid Hill Park each year in July. The Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival is an annual tradition held at Annapolis City Dock each September. Maryland also honors the Hispanic and Latino community with several galas and celebrations across Maryland all year long. For parents who want to expose their children to the value and significance of culture and ethnicity, Maryland is the perfect place to raise a family. Historical Significance Maryland offers great historical significance, specifically in regards to the foundation of our country. King Charles I gave a royal charter to George Calvert for the land that would one day become the state of Maryland. His son, Cecil, established Maryland as a British colony in 1632 and named it after the king's wife, Henrietta Maria. This east coast state was also one of the first 13 colonies that declared independence from Great Britain. Maryland is home to several noteworthy events and people of historical significance. Clara Barton, the founder of the Red Cross, was from Maryland. Frederick Douglass, who was an outspoken abolitionist and statesman, called this great state his home. The Bucktown Village Store is still standing, which is where Underground Railroad activist Harriet Tubman first defied slavery and oppression. Maryland is also home to the Antietam National Battlefield, the Civil War ship USS Constellation, Fort McHenry, and Fort Frederick. Every time you hear the Star-Spangled Banner at an event, you can thank Maryland for our country's national anthem. Many of the country's and world's first inventions took place in Maryland as well. The first railroad station, first telegraph, and first dental school were all created in the Little America state. If you wish to learn more about our country's history, Maryland is an excellent choice for exploring our nation's past. Superior Education System If you're a parent living in Maryland, you can be proud to be part of one of the country's superior education systems. In a recent study published by WalletHub in 2021, Maryland is listed as the second most-educated state in the nation. This research looked at several key metrics for ranking the country's education programs, such as quality of universities, public high school graduation rate, math and reading test scores, free community college, number of Blue Ribbon Schools, and several more. The level of education is directly linked to income potential and a lower risk of unemployment, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Maryland also typically ranks in the top 10 most-educated states in the country. You can be assured your children are in highly effective hands when it comes to the state's education programs. Outdoor Opportunities Galore Maryland is known for its incredible seafood, ethnic heritage, historical foundation, and excellent school system, but if you are a lover of the outdoors, you will absolutely love living here. While the state boasts several popular tourist attractions, there are several hidden gems worth discovering. Did you know that almost half of the state is covered in trees? That's right — about 41% of Maryland is all forests, making it easy to connect with nature after a long week of work in the big city. If you're more of a water lover, you can't go wrong exploring the Chesapeake Bay. You and your kids will have loads of fun playing on the beach, walking through coves, and hiking over freshwater creeks. Be sure to take the time to explore the many islands that are dotted along the bay. For the hiking and outdoor enthusiast, you need to take the time to check out two of the country's most gorgeous and majestic mountain ranges: the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains. There are two beautiful and relaxing parks you should add to your outdoor exploration agenda as well. Cunningham Falls State Park and Catoctin Mountain Park both offer access to the largest waterfall in Maryland. Are there any other reasons you love living here? If so, please let us know! We'd love to add it to our list.??I YOU'RE LOOKING TO SELL YOUR CAR OR TRUCK, NOW IS THE TIME! KOONS CLARKSVILLE IS BUYING ALL VEHICLES! 7 Iconic Foods From Baltimore

Baltimore, Maryland, is full of history, culture, and of course, some of the most amazing food in the country. The Charm City is known for its iconic and hometown fare, many of which had their start over 100 years ago. The next time you're craving some local grub, be sure to try one or more of the legendary favorites listed below. Maryland Blue Crab You can't talk about Maryland without mentioning its delicious blue crab. Baltimore is known for its blue crab as it harvests about half of America's entire blue crab crop. This flavorful crustacean is excellent when steamed and served with melted butter, but there are also a wide variety of other ways it can be served. Crab cakes, crab dip, pan-fried crabs, Maryland crab soup, and crab-stuffed shrimp are a few of the many recipes you can create with this underwater delight. Thames Street Oyster House, Locust Point Steamers, and Nick's Fish House are all well-known for their mouth-watering and full of flavor Maryland blue crab dishes. Snowballs While snowballs go all the way back to the 1800s, they became popular during the days of the Great Depression. These delectable desserts are bound to fill your sweet-tooth craving. Snowballs are made of shaved ice soaked in flavored syrup and then served with a huge dollop of marshmallow fluff on top. They're a combination between snow cones and Italian ice treats with a bit of a Baltimore kick. Some of the most popular flavors include egg custard, skylight, and tutti frutti. While you can likely find this sweet treat anywhere ice cream is served, Opie's Soft-Serve and Snowballs and Original Hawaiian Island Snoballs are two of Charm City's favorite snowball locales. Smith Island Cake Smith Island Cake is the official state dessert of Maryland and named after one of Chesapeake Bay's islands. These homemade confections have been around since the 1800s. The women on Smith Island would make and send them with their husbands when they embarked on the annual autumn oyster harvest. The cakes were meant to be a reminder to the men of how much their families loved and missed them and were hopeful for a successful harvest and safe return. The original recipe for Smith Island Cake consists of eight to 12 layers of vanilla cake covered in chocolate fudge icing and peanut butter cup pieces. Modern-day recipes now include flavors like coconut, red velvet, lemon, blueberry, and many other variations. You can find Smith Island Cake on the dessert menus of many Maryland area restaurants. When you want to try the original recipe or a unique variation, visit Smith Island Baking Company or Smith Island Bakery. Berger Cookies Berger cookies and Baltimore go together like peanut butter and jelly. You just can't have one without the other. This shortbread cookie originated in the Baltimore area in 1835 when the Berger family moved to Charm City, bringing along their German chocolate recipes. A soft, vanilla shortbread cookie that is smothered in thick chocolate ganache icing, this cookie will definitely satisfy your sweet tooth. Discover the amazing flavor of this Baltimore legend at Berger's Bakery at the Lexington Market. You can also enjoy the sweet combination of vanilla, shortbread, and chocolate ganache when you try the Berger-stuffed Baltimore Bomb Pie at Dangerously Delicious Pies. Pit Beef Pit Beef is a staple among grilled dishes in Baltimore. While pit beef stands began to pop up along the Pulaski Highway in the 1970s, you can now find roadside stands serving this delicious fare all over the state. We're not exactly sure how pit beef came to be a seriously savory snack, but we are certainly glad it did. Pit beef is a beef roast that is cooked over hot charcoal and then sliced paper-thin. It's stacked on a roll, typically with onion, horseradish, and barbecue sauce. The iconic pit beef is grilled in many ways, from using wood-flavored barbecues, spicy sauces, or dry rubs. When you try this hometown sandwich, be sure to stop by Chap's Pit Beef, as it's known for its award-winning sandwiches and barbecue. In fact, it was named Guy Fieri's favorite sandwich on Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives." Natty Boh Natty Boh, or National Bohemian Beer, was first brewed in Maryland in 1885. The iconic hometown beer was purchased by Pabst Brewing Company in the 1990s and is still going strong today. Their motto is "Live Pleasantly," and they view their brew as a complement to the laid-back and carefree lifestyle of Charm City locals. National Bohemian Beer proudly offers four different varieties including Original, Day Beer, Bohing, Bohing, Gone!, and Take It to the House. Coddie Known as the poor man's crab cake, coddie became popular in the early 1900s and could be found in diners and delis all over Charm City.  Coddie is a hand-formed salt cod and potato cake mixed with seasonings, deep-fried, and served between two saltine crackers with a squirt of yellow mustard on top. Coddie was created by the Louis Cohen family in the early 1900s. The family was earning very little at their street-side stand in the old Belair Market, where they sold sandwiches, cookies, and candy. They wanted to create something different that would make them stand out from their competitors and draw in new customers. After a bit of experimentation, the Baltimore coddie was born. As they sold this salted cracker snack, it became increasingly popular. The Cohens opened up a small manufacturing plant in order to mass-produce and market coddies. They also began delivering this satisfying treat all over Baltimore from the 1920s until the early 1970s. While it can be difficult to find coddie in today's diners and restaurants, there are a few local favorites that still sell the iconic Charm City morsel. Attman's Deli, Faidley's Seafood, or Pappa's Crab Cakes are a few of the places you can find these delicious delights. So, there you have it. We've just listed seven of our favorite local, iconic foods in the Baltimore, Maryland, area. Which one of these foods will you try first? Are there any of your favorites that we missed? If so, let us know. We'd be more than happy to add it to our list! I you're looking to sell your car or truck, now is the time! Whatever your wine interests are, you can experience some truly world-class offerings here in the Clarksville area. Tin Lizzie Wine Works Have you ever wanted to try your hand at wine-making but weren't sure where to start? Tin Lizzie Wine Works offers premier classes where you can make wines in just four sessions of approximately one hour each. Founder and instructor Dave Zuchero loves to share his passion for great wine. With a degree in wine-making from the University of California at Davis and 40 years of wine-making experience, he has the skills, equipment, and expertise to ensure you make a truly delicious bottle of wine. All materials and ingredients are provided in the class. You'll have access to fresh grapes, a selection of yeasts, and equipment like fermentation vats, barrels, and wine bottles and labels. You can choose what grapes to use, select your yeast with expert guidance from Dave, and choose the amount of wine you want to make, up to a full barrel. You'll enjoy personal instruction from Dave as he guides you through each step, using the same production equipment he uses to make award-winning wines. The first session is in the autumn when the grapes are ripe. You'll learn to prepare the fresh fruit and start the fermentation process in the tanks. One week later, you will return to separate the liquid from the pulp and transfer the wine to oak barrels to age. The third session will commence after a few months, once the wine has aged the correct amount. Now is the time to taste the wine and show off what you've created. Then in summer, after a few more months of aging in the barrel, it's time to bottle and label your very own wine! Olney Winery Located in Olney, Maryland, Olney Winery specializes in crafting local wines from grapes grown all over the world. California supplies their domestic grapes, while on the international front, grapes come from classic wine regions in Spain, Italy, and Germany. Other grapes come from as far away as Chile, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The wines are made at their nearby facility and are available to sample and buy in their centrally located Olney tasting room where you can relax with friends, try wines, and have a great time. Olney Winery's impressive collection of over 34 wines includes red, white, blush, fruit-infused, and dessert varieties. Their special fruit-infused wines are a fan favorite, mixing natural fruit flavors with premium grapes. You'll find delightful flavors such as black cherry, citrus, green apple, and tropical fruit, to name just a few. Their grape wines cover the classics, from merlot to cabernet, pinot noir and pinot grigio, Chilean malbec, Italian Barolo, and many more. That's not all Olney Winery has to offer, though. If you have had a taste of wine and now want a taste of wine-making, they also offer classes where you can try your hand at making your favorite Olney wine. You will get to create a custom label at the end of the process, which you can use to commemorate a special occasion. You can also join Olney Winery's monthly wine club and receive an exclusive dry red or white wine plus a second bottle of your choice from their wine shelf! Alternatively, you can opt for their exclusive fruit wine and get a second fruit wine of your choice.
